As an organization, we emphasize our methods—Design, Test & Scale and Accelerate Learnings—as the expertise we bring to different sectors within the healthcare system. Working with the CaroNova Advisory Council, we look across the landscape for opportunities to collaborate with other champions to improve the health system of the Carolinas. These impact areas will change over time; our current ones include the following:
Improving Mental Wellness
CaroNova advances strategies and policies that foster environments where mental wellbeing is prioritized and integrated into all layers of health across the Carolinas. CaroNova’s foundational work in Improving Mental Wellness is our focus on Youth Mental Health.
Active Projects:
Universal Youth Mental Wellness Supports
Using the Mental Wellness Through Schools (MWTS) Framework, CaroNova and its partners are simplifying, strengthening, and standardizing the foundational elements needed to support youth mental wellness through collaborations with South Carolina.
Designing the Innovation in Behavioral Health Model
CaroNova is partnering with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) as a neutral third-party convener to support implementation of the CMS Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model, a multi-year federal initiative designed to strengthen how care is delivered and paid for to support people with behavioral health needs, including substance use disorders.
Optimizing South Carolina’s Behavioral Healthcare Delivery Infrastructure
CaroNova is working with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) and state partners to realize a behavioral health system that meets the basic and comprehensive needs of South Carolinians.
Completed Projects:
Opioid Stewardship Accelerator
CaroNova launched the Opioid Stewardship Accelerator (OSA) in 2022 to support hospitals and health systems responding to the devastating opioid epidemic that persists across the Carolinas. The OSA is ultimately intended to catalyze the communitywide collaboration and systems changes necessary to improve health outcomes.
Transforming Serious Illness Care
CaroNova is reimagining a healthcare system that is inclusive, patient-centered, and delivers better outcomes for Carolinians. From helping providers and payors remove barriers to empowering patients and families to have an active role in decision-making.
Active Projects:
Comprehensive Palliative Care for Serious Illness Pilots
CaroNova is supporting the implementation of a comprehensive care model and payment infrastructure to support people who are seriously ill, including those facing the end of their lives, and their families. Through pilots in the Carolinas, learnings will inform core elements for the CPCSI model, expected patient outcomes, sustainable payment models, and a framework for collaboration between providers and payors.
Strengthening the Healthcare Workforce
CaroNova and its partners are leading and supporting efforts to retain individuals in the Carolinas healthcare workforce focused on improving the workforce experience and preventing attrition from both individual health systems and from the healthcare field.
Active Projects:
Health System Workforce Experience Accelerator
CaroNova is supporting a bi-state collaborative to transform the workforce experience, examining the root causes of burnout and lack of professional fulfillment, and working with health systems to codesign and launch an online resource suite of existing best practices and innovative strategies.
