our work

CaroNova brings healthcare providers, payors, community health organizations, and philanthropists together. We host a common table that finds straightforward and innovative solutions, helping the healthcare system provide better services to Carolinians at reduced cost.

CaroNova concentrates its work into three portfolios to drive systemic change across the healthcare system of the Carolinas: Improving Mental Wellness, Transforming Serious Illness Care, and Strengthening the Healthcare Workforce.

Improving Mental Wellness

CaroNova advances strategies and policies that foster environments where mental wellbeing is prioritized and integrated into all layers of health across the Carolinas.

CaroNova’s foundational work in Improving Mental Wellness is our focus on Youth Mental Health; find out more here.

MENTAL WELLNESS THROUGH SCHOOLS

Meeting Students Where They Are: CaroNova is normalizing mental wellness for all youth through collaborative, cross-sector efforts in schools, healthcare, and the community.

South Carolina Behavioral Health Action Plan

Establishing a Comprehensive System of Care: CaroNova is working with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and state partners to realize a behavioral health system that meets the basic and comprehensive needs of South Carolinians, while also serving as a national model of excellence in providing behavioral health care.

North Carolina Youth Mental Health Action Plan

Meeting Young People’s Needs: CaroNova is ensuring that all North Carolina youth and their families live in an environment with a system of services and supports that enables them to thrive.

Advancing Opioid Stewardship

Enhancing Treatment with Understanding, Efficacy and Dignity: CaroNova is supporting and aligning treatment providers in advancing best practices to prevent and treat opioid use disorder and scaling them across the Carolinas.

Transforming Serious Illness Care

CaroNova is reimagining a healthcare system that is inclusive, patient-centered, and delivers better outcomes for Carolinians living with serious illness: from helping healthcare providers and payors remove barriers to care, to empowering patients and families to have an active role in decision-making, to ensuring that healthcare professionals have the resources and training to compassionately address patients’ needs.

Comprehensive Palliative Care for Serious Illness

Prioritizing the Patient: CaroNova is designing and testing a comprehensive care model and payment infrastructure to support people who are seriously ill, including those facing the end of their lives, and their families. The model will establish minimum standards for patient outcomes and quality of life, increased access to high-quality palliative care, sustainable alternate payment models, and a framework for collaboration between providers and payors.

Strengthening the Healthcare Workforce

CaroNova and its partners are leading and supporting efforts to retain individuals in the Carolinas healthcare workforce focused on improving the workforce experience and preventing attrition from both individual health systems and from the healthcare field.

Health System Workforce Experience Accelerator

Supporting Our Patient Care Champions: CaroNova is boosting workforce resiliency and fighting burnout by building a bi-state collaboration framework to transform the workforce experience, examining the root causes of burnout and lack of professional fulfillment, and working with health systems to codesign and launch an online resource suite of existing best practices and innovative strategies.

Prior CaroNova Investments

Home Hospital Early Adopters Accelerator

CaroNova launched the Home Hospital Early Adopters Accelerator in partnership with Ariadne Labs in September 2021. The Accelerator supported hospitals and healthcare systems in further developing their own home hospital programs, providing a more comfortable and less disruptive experience to low-acuity patients while preserving hospital beds and staff for higher-acuity patients.
